‘She Started It‘ is an inspiring documentary film that shines a much-needed spotlight on female entrepreneurs. Co-directed by journalists Insiyah Saeed and Nora Poggi, the film follows four different female founders over the course of one year as they create and build new startups. The idea behind the film is to give exposure to women tech founders and to empower the next generation of female leaders — particularly in business and in the technology sector.
Nora will be flying into Bellingham to attend the February 13th showing of her documentary at the Pickford Film Center and she will host a Q&A after the conclusion of the film. This will be a rare opportunity to meet and speak with one of the world’s most knowledgeable individuals in regard to the state of female entrepreneurship today… and will quite likely provide insights into what could possibly be done to increase gender equity in the startup world.
So what motivates a person to create a documentary about female founders? The answer to that question lies in Nora’s background. Born and raised in France, Nora graduated from top French schools, Sciences Po Paris and La Sorbonne. After graduation, she moved to San Francisco to work for French social network Viadeo.com. She then went back to her first love, films, with the production company Lucky Dragon Productions, where she trained in all areas of film production and promotion. At the same time, she started freelance reporting for Examiner.com on major Silicon Valley events, producing video interviews with tech industry players. She then moved on to write about entrepreneurship & tech for French newspaper Usine Nouvelle.
In 2013 Nora met her future co-director, Insiyah Saeed at a Women 2.0 event, which, coincidentally, was about finding a co-founder. They quickly realized that women who were starting companies were not household names – far from it – and hardly anyone was talking about their achievements. They decided it was high time to show the stories of real women who were making it happen – which would in turn encourage more women to take the leap. They began working on ‘She Start It’ that year and the film premiered on October 8, 2016.
The showing of ‘She Started It’ at the Pickford Film Center on Monday, February 13th was arranged by Mary Keane of The Bellingham Foundry. Tickets for the showing are already sold out, but Bellingham Entrepreneurs will be holding FounderSocial from 5:30pm to 6:30pm for ticket-holders as well as anyone who would like to just stop by for an hour and socialize in the Pickford Lobby.
