CodeJam is a monthly event for software developers to learn something new and then co-work together for the rest of the evening. This is a free event to attend, but since it overlaps with dinnertime, we have included an option to have dinner conveniently provided. You are of course welcome to bring your own food of choice or simply eat at some other time.

As for coding, we’ll provide the desks, electricity, and the WiFi, but please note that you must bring your own laptop to be able to work on code. We’ll start the event off with the educational part of the evening, which will be a 30- to 45-minute tutorial on a specific topic. After the hands-on tutorial wraps up, everyone is free to work on whatever they prefer (whether it pertains to the tutorial or not) until the end of the event at which time there will be a few minutes to share/demo what you’ve been working on if you would like to do so!

Event schedule:
5:30pm – Gather, eat, and hang out
6:00pm – Hands-on tutorial
6:30pm – Work on individual / group projects
8:00pm – Demo what you’ve been working on (optional)

October 12th Event Details:

Tutorial Topic: Contributing to Open Source Projects through Hacktoberfest

We’ll start the tutorial off by covering the basics of git and then move on to a walkthough of how to make a pull request on GitHub. By the end of the tutorial, everyone should have the knowledge and ability to participate in Hacktoberfest.

About Hacktoberfest:

Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open source software where registered participants can earn a free t-shirt by making four pull requests during the month of October. And the beauty of this program is that pull requests can be to any public repo on GitHub!

Be Prepared! Make sure that you’ve complete these steps before CodeJam begins.

  1. Set up a GitHub account if you don’t already have one (github.com)
  2. Sign up for Hactoberfest (hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/sign_up/register)
  3. Download and install Git (git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Getting-Started-Installing-Git)
